THE POWER OF PASSION
by Miriam Lytle
I’m sure there are many of you readers who can relate to life changes. At mid-life, you take a good look at what you want out of the next half and re-evaluate. Suddenly it occurs to you that it’s your passion you want to pursue.
I kept thinking about my passion as a skin care specialist and licensed esthetician, and decided to follow my dream. So I bought a day spa business last year. It was a dream come true.
It was at that time that I started working with Jaya. I just feel she’s lifted my passion to a higher level. Over the last several months, I’ve been impressed by Jaya’s vast knowledge, coaching skills and keen insight into our industry. She’s taken great personal interest, and all of the advice she’s given me has been right on the mark.
The results validate this. My clientele is growing, I’m in the process of creating my own line of skin care products, I’ve added services, hired additional staff, and so much more. And it hasn’t even been a year since acquiring the business!
A little about my day spa…
Wolf Mountain Day Spa is in Grass Valley, a charming historic gold mine town in the Sierra Nevada foothills in Northern California. People come here for the vast natural beauty and quality of life. My spa is surrounded by towering conifers and clear skies. It’s picture perfect and enhances the spa visit for my clients.
While we are a member of The Day Spa Association, our highest honor is from the community’s annual business survey sponsored by the local newspaper. We have won “Best Day Spa” for three years, including this year.

A day spa with a difference
Our key distinction from our competition is rejuvenating water treatments with herbal showers and hydrotherapy. This allows us to get creative and offer a variety of soothing spa packages. The “Scrub, Tub & Rub” is the most requested and includes body exfoliating and a Swedish massage.
Our couples packages are also big, and reservations have been quickly coming in for Valentine’s Day!
We also offer the finest in skin and body care, facials and anti-aging facials, waxing, make-up applications, and specialty massages including warm stone massage.
Something for everyone
One of the most exciting progresses is that we are getting more men who are coming for services – not just buying a gift certificate for their wives or girlfriends. We offer several “manly” type services with a pampering touch including facials, TLC for hands and feet, back treatments and an escape package with an herbal steam shower.
Most popular among our clients, including men, is our facial resurfacing treatments featuring a highly effective glycolic peel and microdermabrasion therapy. We are also becoming specialists among teenagers with skin problems. As a mother of two young girls who’ve experienced this, I feel I can really put my talent and passion for skin care to work in this area and make a difference.
I am particularly proud of my high-end line of natural products. Our best seller is Yonka, which means “living water.” The cosmetic line offers a beautiful balance of four sciences consisting of aromatherapy, phytotherapy, marine therapy and fruit acid therapy. I also carry Jane Iredale, a natural mineral cosmetic line.
New and improved
Recently, I started to bring in unique gift items. This is new, and I wasn’t sure how my clients would receive this. Perhaps it’s the uniqueness of the products, like Me! Bath (yummy fizzies for the bath), adorable mules, handcrafted glass nail files, and purse hangars, but I’ve had rave reviews, and I’m busy re-ordering to keep up with the demand!
As I approach my first anniversary, and with Jaya’s expert guidance, I’ve got a lot charted out for the future of the spa. I’m excited about developing my own line of products and tailoring many services to fit the growing needs of our clientele.
I am passionate about community outreach. I spearheaded a fundraising effort and matched the donations for a local breast cancer foundation that offers low cost mammograms. This is a cause that is deeply personal, and I plan to expand upon this fundraiser this year.
The final touch
With scented candles, a babbling fountain, soft lights and hypnotic music, the spa offers a wonderful escape the moment you walk in. It’s rewarding to make people feel good – even if they’ve come in for a quick waxing. And I’m so glad I returned to my passion. It’s empowering and inspiring.
Please come up to Grass Valley for a visit some time. And don’t forget to pamper yourself, too!
